About
the Author
Mark
Smith had an extensive career in Education. Although trained as an English and
History teacher he taught little History and English.
He began his career in the
New South Wales Department of Education. He was a District School Counsellor
and Guidance Officer before he became a Teachers College Lecturer. He
transferred to the Commonwealth Teaching Service and became a Principal
Education Officer. After being compulsorily transferred to the newly created
Northern Territory Teaching Service, he was made Superintendent of Guidance and
Special Services.
Mark's Collected Works exclude some material associated with his educational vocation as a School Counsellor and as a Curriculum Officer.
However, the bulk of this material is concerned with his post-employment
years. These writings have flowed from his personal interests in philosophy,
religion, anthropology, psychology, education and literature. He has grouped them under seven headings but there is much overlapping in the categories
and some repetition of subject matter.
Due to Mark's declining eyesight he has decided to bring his my works to a conclusion. He says,
"My writings have been
largely for myself. They have formed part of my self-education. If members of
my family or other interested persons can gain something from my writings this
would also give me satisfaction."
His written works include elements of Mark's Inscape and Landscape. The Inscape is concerned with philosophical psychology and religious
matters. His Landscape writings are, in the main, about travel records. These
records contain matters concerning his observations and opinions. They are also a
mixture of his Inscape and the Landscape.
